The New York Islanders ignited controversy by displaying a fundraiser for convicted police officer Erik Duran on their jumbotron during a recent game. Duran received a 3-9 year prison sentence for throwing a cooler at Eric Duprey, causing the 30-year-old's death during a 2023 Bronx drug bust. The promotion included a QR code for donations to Duran's legal defense and promised 25% of 50/50 raffle proceeds would support the cause.

The victim's family expressed being "deeply troubled" by the team's decision to align with efforts supporting Duran's defense. Their attorney called the promotion "not a neutral act" that risks undermining public confidence in the legal process. Meanwhile, the Sergeants Benevolent Association organized the fundraiser, which saw the 50/50 raffle generate $44,890 in donations. The union president claimed the arena erupted in applause when Duran's photo appeared on screen.

This marks the first time in at least two decades that an NYPD officer will serve prison time for an on-duty death. Police supporters have protested the conviction, arguing it discourages officers from performing their duties. The Islanders have declined to comment on the backlash, leaving many to question the team's judgment in promoting a convicted felon's defense fund during a professional sporting event.
