At least three fans were asked by WNBA security personnel to cover shirts containing messages regarding transgender women participating in women's sports during Sunday's game in Atlanta between the Dream and the Indiana Fever. The WNBA issued a statement Monday declaring that the fans should have been free to wear the shirts and stating, "This should not have happened."

Two individuals wore shirts stating women's sports should be restricted to those assigned female at birth, while one person wore a shirt supporting transgender people. The league has faced recent debates regarding transgender women's participation, despite the WNBA's collective bargaining agreement containing no specific language regarding gender identity.

The league has since informed security workers that their actions were wrong. While the Atlanta Dream emphasized their commitment to an inclusive environment, they clarified that Dream personnel were not involved in the security decisions made by the WNBA.
