Golden Knights Acquire Wotherspoon in Korczak Trade to Free Cap Space for Andersson

The Vegas Golden Knights completed a defensemen swap Tuesday, sending Kaedan Korczak to Pittsburgh for Parker Wotherspoon. This move clears $3.25 million annually in salary cap space as Korczak was entering the first year of his four-year extension worth $3.25 million per season.

The trade significantly boosts Vegas' chances of re-signing pending UFA Rasmus Andersson, who posted 17 goals and 47 points in 2025-26. Cap space jumps from $4.625 million to $7.375 million, potentially reaching $16.175 million if Alex Pietrangelo goes on long-term injured reserve. Andersson arrived from Calgary in January alongside Noah Hanifin, forming the defensive pairing that propelled Vegas to the Stanley Cup Final.

Wotherspoon contributes 30 points in 80 games while counting only $500,000 against the cap with Pittsburgh retaining half his salary. This gives Vegas four defensemen under contract with room to add Andersson. The Golden Knights have now traded away Dorofeyev and Schmid to preserve additional future cap flexibility.

Pittsburgh gains depth for their defensive corps, which rotated 15 players last season. Korczak joins veterans Erik Karlsson and Kris Letang among six defensemen under contract. The Penguins maintain approximately $36 million in cap space as they build on their return to playoffs after a three-year absence.

Vegas addressed their biggest offseason priority by creating sufficient cap room to retain Andersson before Wednesday's free agency deadline.
