The Calgary Flames have secured defenseman Simon Nemec with a five-year contract valued at $36.25 million. This deal, which carries an annual salary cap hit of $7.25 million, will keep Nemec in Calgary through the 2030-31 NHL season. The Flames acquired Nemec's rights last month from the New Jersey Devils as part of a significant trade package.

New Jersey received a second-round pick, two conditional first-round selections, and prospect Etienne Morin in exchange for Nemec and winger Maxim Tsyplakov. Devils general manager Sunny Mehta indicated the offer from Calgary was too substantial to refuse and that the move provided Nemec, 22, with an opportunity for a fresh start and a clearer developmental path.

Nemec, the second overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft, has played 159 games in the league, averaging about 19 minutes of ice time. This contract signals Calgary's commitment to the young defenseman as they aim to build for the future.
