Captain Nico Hischier has signed a five-year contract extension with the New Jersey Devils worth $58.5 million, putting to rest speculation about his future beyond next season. The deal kicks in for 2027-28 with a $11.7 million cap hit, up from his current $7.25 million figure. Hischier, 27, is entering his 10th NHL season after recording 28 goals and 38 assists in 82 games last year.

The center has accumulated 488 points in 609 career games with New Jersey, ranking sixth on the franchise's all-time scoring list. Hischier finished ninth in Selke Trophy voting as one of the league's better two-way forwards, demonstrating both offensive production and defensive responsibility that makes him invaluable to the Devils' core.

New general manager Sunny Mehta prioritized retaining Hischier, calling him a foundational piece for the franchise's future. The extension keeps Hischier under contract through the 2031-32 season, two years beyond star center Jack Hughes' current deal expiration. Hischier will earn $14.5 million in each of his first two seasons, with the deal structured at $12.1 million and $8.7 million in the final two years.

This commitment signals stability for a Devils organization that has faced questions about locker room dynamics and underperformance in recent seasons. Hischier's decision to stay addresses concerns about potential dysfunction while giving Mehta a proven leader to build around as the team looks to return to playoff contention.
