Schottenheimer's Second Draft Prep: Deeper Dive Than Year One

Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Brian Schottenheimer enters his second draft cycle with markedly superior preparation compared to his rookie year. Meetings commenced this week at The Star, involving ownership, scouting leadership, and the entire coaching staff to set the draft board. Schottenheimer admitted last year felt rushed as he simultaneously built his staff and integrated new defensive personnel knowledge.

This time around, the 52-year-old claims he knows the top 150 prospects by name, having watched extensive tape on the top 75 players. He prioritized visiting pro days at Miami, Texas, and Texas A&M, often joining VP of Player Personnel Will McClay. Schottenheimer even instituted a rule requiring him to see a full game tape before attending any workout.

Beyond the drills, the coach emphasized the value of off-field interactions, particularly team dinners where he probes players' outside interests and influences. This commitment comes as the Cowboys face pressure owning two first-round picks for the first time since 2008, following a historically poor defensive showing last season.

Schottenheimer deliberately shifted focus away from just observing combine-style drills, feeling coaches can be misled by workouts alone. His enhanced preparation aims to ensure better integration of talent into the locker room, especially given the team's need to bolster defense after surrendering a franchise-record 511 points.
