The Pittsburgh Pirates have bolstered their bullpen by acquiring reliever Ron Marinaccio from the San Diego Padres. The move aims to strengthen a pitching staff that has struggled in critical situations as the team competes for a National League wild card spot with the trade deadline approaching.

Marinaccio, 31, joins the Pirates after posting a 1-0 record with a 4.79 ERA in 33 appearances for the Padres this season. This marks his third MLB team, having previously played for the New York Yankees from 2022-24.

To accommodate Marinaccio, Pittsburgh designated reliever Dennis Santana for assignment. Santana, 30, who had shown promise as the team's potential closer last year with 16 saves, has faced difficulties this season, recording a 2-5 record with a 6.05 ERA and two saves.
