San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan "was this close to maybe losing his right eye" in a car crash on July 14, according to friend Chris Simms. Shanahan sustained multiple injuries, including cuts requiring over 40 stitches, a broken nose, three broken ribs, a broken hand, and a severe concussion.

Simms, a college teammate of Shanahan's at the University of Texas, received photos of the coach's injuries from his wife, describing them as "jarring." Shanahan was hospitalized and is recovering, though he is still experiencing lingering concussion symptoms and "battling" the effects. The accident involved a collision with an SUV in Palo Alto, California.

Despite the severity of his injuries, the other driver was unharmed. Police found no evidence of impairment, and no citations were issued. While Shanahan is recovering, his return to full coaching duties has no set timeline, though the team expects him back before the September 11 season opener. The incident has been emotionally taxing for Shanahan and his family.
