San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was not charged in a recent car crash where he sustained serious injuries because of an officer's discretion, a spokesperson for Palo Alto Police told ESPN. Shanahan admitted to causing the July 14 crash by reaching for his dropped cellphone, veering into oncoming traffic. Vehicle collision data initially indicated the other driver was at fault due to a "clerical error," and the database showed Shanahan violated California's hands-free law. However, the responding officer chose not to issue a citation.

"It is not uncommon for officers to elect to not issue a citation to either party involved in a collision," the spokesperson stated, emphasizing no preferential treatment was given. Both police and the team have declined to release official accounts or reports. Shanahan described his injuries, including a shattered nose, three broken ribs, a broken hand, and a concussion requiring 40 stitches near his eye.

The delay in publicly disclosing the accident, which occurred eleven days prior to training camp, was attributed to timing and Shanahan's recovery. This incident echoes a 2023 case involving Elon Musk, who also was not cited for cellphone use while driving in Palo Alto, as no officer witnessed it directly.
