Jimmy Johnson Warns Jets: Draft Picks Mean Nothing Without Smart Choices

Hall of Fame coach Jimmy Johnson is cautioning the New York Jets that stockpiling draft picks means little without making the right selections. The Jets currently hold eight picks in the first two rounds across the next two drafts, positioning them for a potential franchise-altering rebuild. This mirrors Johnson's own experience with the Dallas Cowboys following the Herschel Walker trade in 1989.

Johnson's Cowboys dynasty was built on selecting Hall of Famers like Emmitt Smith and Troy Aikman with those acquired picks, while recent teams with similar draft capital - the Miami Dolphins, Indianapolis Colts, and Cleveland Browns - failed to maximize their opportunities. Johnson emphasizes that teams must treat each pick as if it's their last to avoid reckless decisions. The Jets traded Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams last November, bringing back three first-round picks and one second-rounder.

The Jets face a critical juncture with the second overall pick expected to go to an edge rusher like David Bailey or Arvell Reese. General manager Darren Mougey has the flexibility to move up or down the board, but NFL analyst Daniel Jeremiah stresses that finding a franchise quarterback remains paramount. With Fernando Mendoza likely going first to the Raiders, the Jets may wait until 2027 for a quarterback, highlighting that without the right signal-caller, even abundant draft capital cannot guarantee success.
