Gabe Taylor will step onto Audi Field for the DC Defenders’ home opener against the Houston Gamblers on Saturday. The 24‑year‑old defensive back said the atmosphere feels “everything” after growing up hearing his older brother Sean Taylor’s name echo through Washington. Sean’s No. 21 hangs retired at the former Redskins stadium, and Gabe will wear the same digit No. 21 for the Defenders.

Sean, a two‑time Pro Bowler drafted fifth overall in 2004, posted 12 interceptions in 55 games before his 2007 death. Gabe logged 159 tackles, 10 interceptions and 36 pass deflections in five seasons at Rice, yet went undrafted in 2025. A UFL showcase later secured a Defenders roster slot and reunited him with coach Blake Williams, son of Sean’s former coordinator.

Last week Gabe sealed a win over Columbus with a game‑changing interception, and fans at the fanfest roared “Twenty‑one!” when he switched from his college No. 26 to his brother’s iconic number. He told reporters the moment “means everything,” underscoring the pressure to honor the Taylor legacy while proving his own worth. The Defenders hope his play fuels a strong start to the XFL season.
