Raiders QB Race Continues: Kubiak Delays Starter Decision

Las Vegas Raiders coach Klint Kubiak refused to name a starting quarterback after Thursday's 22-20 preseason win over the Houston Texans. "We got another week. I don't want anyone to be comfortable in their job," Kubiak said. Veteran Kirk Cousins sat for a second straight game, joining stars Maxx Crosby, Ashton Jeanty, Brock Bowers and Kolton Miller on the sideline.

Rookie Fernando Mendoza started and played the entire first half, completing 8 of 15 passes for 86 yards with an interception. His night began poorly with an 80-yard pick-six to linebacker Wade Woodaz on the opening drive. "I probably should have checked it down to the flat," Mendoza said. "It was not a good throw." He also faced pressure six times and was sacked once.

Aidan O'Connell played the final two quarters, throwing for 166 yards and scoring the go-ahead rushing touchdown in the final seconds. Mendoza acknowledged the steep learning curve: "The margin for error is small in the NFL, and one slip-up could lead to a catastrophe." He vowed to improve his pocket movement.
