San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama has agreed to a five-year, $252 million maximum rookie-scale contract extension. The deal, which includes a player option for the fifth season, was finalized after extensive discussions between Wembanyama, his representatives, and the Spurs organization. Wembanyama chose the 25% maximum over a potential 30% supermax escalator, a decision he stated was rooted in prioritizing the team's ability to build a sustained championship contender around him.

Wembanyama became eligible for the extension following the Spurs' elimination in the NBA Finals. The 22-year-old French phenom had a dominant 2025-26 season, earning Defensive Player of the Year honors and leading the league in blocks. He was also named to the All-NBA first team and made his second All-Star appearance, starting for the first time. His statistical output included career highs of 25.0 points and 11.5 rebounds per game, alongside 3.1 assists, 3.08 blocks, and 1.03 steals.

His individual achievements are remarkable, making him one of only seven players in league history to average at least 25 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 blocks in a season. He recorded 42 games with double-digit rebounds and 42 double-doubles. The Spurs' starting lineup featuring Wembanyama, De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, Devin Vassell, and Julian Champagnie posted an impressive 21-3 record during the regular season, finishing as the second-best lineup in the NBA. This extension solidifies Wembanyama's commitment to San Antonio and signals the franchise's intent to build around their young cornerstone for years to come.
