San Diego Padres right-hander Joe Boyle left Saturday's game against the Minnesota Twins with a sprained right ankle after slipping on the dugout steps following the second inning. Acquired from the Detroit Tigers on Aug. 3, Boyle allowed three solo home runs in the first two innings, including a leadoff homer to Byron Buxton and consecutive shots by Carlos Correa and rookie Brooks Lee.

"I think my spike got caught on like the edge of the step... and then it kind of just made me slip a little bit," Boyle told reporters via MLB.com. "I tried to catch myself, and I ended up rolling my ankle kind of on the bottom step there."

He was evaluated by a trainer and manager Mike Shildt after warmup pitches in the third inning and remained in the game, recording two outs and allowing a double to Max Kepler before being replaced by Wandy Peralta. Boyle expressed hope the injury is minor and that he can make his next start Friday against the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Padres (70-60) hold the National League's third wild-card spot, two games ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
