Seattle Mariners right-hander Emerson Hancock pitched six hitless innings in his season debut before manager Dan Wilson removed him from Sunday's game against the Cleveland Guardians. The 26-year-old, who cracked Seattle's starting rotation after Bryce Miller's injury, needed 97 pitches to retire the first 18 batters he faced.

Hancock walked Jose Ramirez in the first inning and hit CJ Kayfus with a fastball in the sixth, his only baserunners. The 2020 sixth overall draft pick set a career high with nine strikeouts, with no batted ball against him leaving the infield. His no-hit bid ended when Guardians rookie Chase DeLauter singled off reliever Cooper Criswell leading off the seventh.

Seattle led 7-0 when Hancock departed and eventually won 8-0. The Mariners' offense provided ample support, with Brendan Donovan hitting a three-run homer and Leo Rivas adding an RBI single. The victory showcased Seattle's pitching depth as Hancock stepped into a key role following Miller's absence.
