Mariners Call Up Top Prospect Colt Emerson for MLB Debut

The Seattle Mariners promoted Colt Emerson from Triple-A Tacoma on Sunday, inserting the 20-year-old prospect into their lineup against the Padres. Emerson, ranked sixth in MLB prospects entering the season, started at third base and batted ninth in his major league debut. The promotion coincided with placing utilityman Brendan Donovan on the 10-day injured list due to a left groin strain, creating an opportunity for the highly touted infielder.

Emerson signed an $95 million contract with the Mariners in April, representing their largest commitment to a minor leaguer without a major league appearance. The 22nd overall pick in 2023 delivered a breakout 2025 campaign across three levels, hitting .285 with an .842 OPS, 16 homers and 78 RBIs. This season in Tacoma, he maintained strong production with a .255 average and .816 OPS through 35 games.

The Mariners view Emerson as their shortstop of the future, though he'll begin his big league career at third base. J.P. Crawford remains the everyday shortstop, having recovered from a shoulder injury that sidelined him early in the season. Donovan's groin issues persist—he's now dealt with multiple strains since April—which allowed Emerson to seize his moment in Seattle's infield mix.
