The Cleveland Guardians have acquired left-handed pitcher Foster Griffin from the Washington Nationals in a trade finalized Monday, according to sources who spoke with ESPN's Jeff Passan. This marks the Guardians' second significant move before the trade deadline, following their earlier acquisition of outfielder Jo Adell from the Los Angeles Angels.

Griffin, a first-time All-Star, has demonstrated exceptional performance this season with a 12-3 record, a 3.06 ERA, and 116 strikeouts in 22 starts for the Nationals. He is also eligible for free agency after the current season.

Despite a fastball averaging 91.4 mph, Griffin utilizes a diverse seven-pitch mix, including a cutter, changeup, and splitter, to effectively counter both left-handed and right-handed batters. He recently achieved a streak of eight consecutive starts allowing one run or fewer. In 2025, he allowed only one home run over 78 innings in Japan. This year, he has surrendered 19 home runs but leads MLB in wins.
