Cleveland Guardians pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz have been moved to unpaid non-disciplinary leave as they await trial on federal charges related to an alleged pitch-rigging scheme. The move, agreed upon by Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association, comes after previously being on paid leave.

Clase and Ortiz pleaded not guilty to charges including wire fraud conspiracy, honest services wire fraud conspiracy, money laundering conspiracy, and conspiracy to influence sporting events by bribery. Prosecutors allege the pitchers received money to throw pitches for balls intentionally, benefiting gamblers who wagered on individual pitches. The top charges carry potential prison sentences of up to 20 years.

The case has already impacted MLB operations, with the league requesting sportsbooks cap betting limits on individual pitches at $200 and prohibit such wagers from parlays. Their trial is scheduled for November, with jury selection beginning Nov. 2.
