Atlanta Braves right-handers Spencer Schwellenbach and Hurston Waldrep will undergo season-ending surgeries following setbacks in their elbow rehabilitation. The team announced Waldrep will require Tommy John surgery, potentially sidelining him through the 2027 season. Schwellenbach had surgery to remove bone spurs from his right elbow in February, with his upcoming procedure addressing additional bone spurs.

Both players experienced discomfort while throwing recently, leading to MRIs that recommended surgical intervention. Manager Walt Weiss stated the organization sought "multiple opinions from the best doctors in the country" before proceeding. The injuries rob the NL East-leading Braves of rotation depth as they prepare for the playoffs.

Meanwhile, right-hander Spencer Strider, on the injured list since June 13 with elbow inflammation, faces diminished odds of returning this season. Left-hander Chris Sale remains the team's ace after throwing a shutout in a 1-0 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Bryce Elder, Martín Pérez, Grant Holmes, and Tyler Mahle round out the rotation.

Right-handed reliever Robert Suarez, also on the injured list with elbow inflammation, is expected to throw off a mound next week.
