Brewers' Murphy Considers Moving Megill from Closer Role

Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy is weighing whether to remove Trevor Megill from his closer role after the All-Star's early-season struggles. Megill, who saved 30 games last season, was booed by fans at American Family Field after allowing three runs in a 9-7, 10-inning loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday. The outing left him with a staggering 14.40 ERA through five innings this season.

Murphy emphasized that Megill shouldn't be booed, especially considering his stellar performance last year when he earned the save in Milwaukee's Game 5 NL Division Series victory over the Chicago Cubs. The veteran right-hander had combined for 51 saves from 2024-25 with a 2.49 ERA and 60 strikeouts over 47 innings. However, his current struggles have coincided with Milwaukee's six-game losing streak, their longest since 2023.

With limited alternatives available - Abner Uribe is also struggling with a 5.68 ERA and Jared Koenig is on the injured list - Murphy faces a difficult decision. While Megill's velocity remains consistent with last season, his command and pitch execution have deteriorated significantly. 'The way he's throwing the ball now, he doesn't deserve it,' Murphy said, 'but he can earn it back.'
