Athletics Reinstate Max Muncy from IL, Option Darell Hernaiz to Triple-A

The Oakland Athletics activated third baseman Max Muncy from the injured list Monday, ending his six-week absence due to a fractured fifth metacarpal in his left hand. Muncy last appeared in a game on April 25 and brings his .239 batting average back to a lineup that has struggled offensively this season.

To make room on the roster, Oakland optioned infielder Darell Hernaiz to Triple-A Las Vegas. Hernaiz posted a .237 average with one home run and seven RBI in 47 games, primarily serving as a utility infielder since his call-up earlier this year.

Muncy's return provides immediate help at third base and in the middle of the order. His seven RBI in limited action shows he can contribute right away, though the Athletics are still in rebuilding mode with one of the youngest rosters in baseball.

The roster move signals Oakland's attempt to stabilize their infield while giving playing time to younger players. Muncy's presence in the clubhouse also adds veteran leadership to a team focused on development.
