WNBA's Sun Sold to Houston's Fertittas

The Connecticut Sun franchise has been sold to the Fertitta family for a record $300 million, sources confirmed to ESPN. The team will complete the 2026 season in Uncasville before relocating to Houston in 2027. This move brings the WNBA back to Houston after the original Comets franchise folded in 2008, ending Connecticut's 23-year tenure as a WNBA market.

Houston's return to the WNBA has been anticipated since commissioner Cathy Engelbert specifically highlighted the city and Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta as "up next" and "the one we have our eye on" during last year's expansion announcement. The franchise will likely revive the Comets name, echoing the original team that won four consecutive championships from 1997 to 2000.

The Sun, owned by the Mohegan tribe since 2003, previously agreed to sell to a Boston group for $325 million but faced league opposition. This sale to the Fertittas represents another step toward WNBA teams being owned by NBA franchises, following the league's established preference for such ownership structures while expanding into markets with proven basketball infrastructure.
