In a 2-1 win over the San Diego Padres, rookie right fielder Carson Benge and left fielder A. J. Ewing combined for three outfield assists at home plate in the first two innings, a rare feat that has the Mets the only MLB team since 1920 to do so.

The sequence began when the Padres' first two batters singled off rookie Nolan McLean, placing runners on first and second. Ty France's soft single sent Benge to the plate, where he threw a one‑hop, 99.9‑mph throw that tagged Jake Cronenworth out. A second, 103‑mph shot followed, removing Manny Machado after coach Bob Henley waved him home, only to be cut down by Benge's hard throw.

In the second inning, Ewing cut down Xander Bogaerts on a close play, preserving the Mets' narrow lead. Benge, 23, also pitched at Oklahoma State and has thrown out a runner in the seventh against the Nationals, bringing his total to nine assists, second only to Dodgers' Andy Pages.

The Mets' defensive burst earned Benge standing ovations at Citi Field, while the Padres were held to four hits in the first inning and failed to score. The duo’s speed and arm strength made the game a showcase of rookie talent.
