St. Bonaventure men's basketball coach Mark Schmidt is expected to retire after this season, according to sources who spoke with ESPN's Pete Thamel. The 63-year-old coach has led the Bonnies for 19 years, making him the program's longest-tenured coach in modern history. Schmidt's retirement announcement comes as St. Bonaventure prepares for their final regular-season game and the upcoming Atlantic 10 tournament.

During his tenure in Olean, New York, Schmidt compiled a 339-253 record and became the career wins leader in program history. He guided the Bonnies to three NCAA tournament appearances, including the memorable 2018 season when they won their final 12 regular-season games to earn an at-large bid. The Bonnies defeated UCLA in the First Four before falling to Florida in the opening round. Schmidt also captured two Atlantic 10 regular-season titles and earned conference Coach of the Year honors in 2016 and 2021.

Before his St. Bonaventure tenure, Schmidt spent six seasons as head coach at Robert Morris and served as an assistant at Xavier, Loyola Maryland, and Penn State. The Bonnies recently hired former ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski as general manager, who is expected to play a significant role in selecting Schmidt's successor. Schmidt's departure marks the end of an era for a program he transformed into a consistent Atlantic 10 contender.
