Providence has fired men's basketball coach Kim English after three seasons, athletic director Steve Napolillo announced Friday. The decision came one day after the Friars lost 85-72 to No. 13 St. John's in the Big East Tournament quarterfinals, finishing the season 15-18 overall and 7-13 in conference play.

English, who replaced Ed Cooley after Cooley left for Georgetown in 2023, compiled a 48-52 overall record and 23-37 in Big East games. The Friars never reached the NCAA tournament under English and failed to finish with a winning conference record. After beating three ranked teams in his first season, Providence went 0-10 against ranked opponents the past two years.

English acknowledged the challenges of coaching in a competitive league, saying he was "figuring it out" against "whales, giants, college basketball royalty." The team struggled this season, losing nine of its first 11 Big East games. Without injured guard Jason Edwards, the Friars were outrebounded 51-30 and outscored 30-4 in bench points in their final game. English's tenure ends after failing to match the success of his predecessor, who led Providence to seven NCAA tournament appearances in 12 seasons.
