Nick Kyrgios, the 2022 Wimbledon runner-up and former world No. 13, announced he tested positive for cocaine during a June tournament in Mallorca. The ITIA confirmed a provisional suspension handed down on Aug. 4. Kyrgios took full responsibility, citing mental and physical toll from injuries and career uncertainty. He plans to step away for 28 days for treatment. Unlike recent cases involving Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek, where contamination was claimed, Kyrgios admitted knowingly taking the substance. Cocaine is banned by WADA as a stimulant. Past cases like Dan Evans (2017) and Richard Gasquet (2009) resulted in reduced or overturned bans. Kyrgios could face up to four years if the use is deemed in-competition, or three months if out-of-competition. During suspension, he cannot participate in any tennis events. Given his injury history and retirement hints, a lengthy ban may end his career.

Kyrgios revealed the news first on social media, expressing regret and calling it a "wake up call." He emphasized the emotional strain of nearing retirement and the pressure of professional tennis. Despite wild card appearances, his competitive future remains uncertain.

The case highlights ongoing debates about doping penalties in tennis, especially after Kyrgios previously criticized lighter sanctions for other players. His suspension bars him from Grand Slams, ATP events, and media appearances during the ban period.

If handed a short sentence, a final Australian Open appearance isn't impossible. However, his candid discussions about mental health and lack of long-term tennis plans suggest this could mark the end of his playing career.
