Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova has received a four-year ban for refusing a doping test, a decision that has sent shockwaves through tennis. The Czech player, the first unseeded player to win the Wimbledon women's singles title in 2023, denied a doping control officer entry to her Prague home in December 2025. The independent tribunal found no compelling justification for a shorter ban, describing the matter as "very unfortunate."

Vondrousova claimed she feared for her safety when the officer arrived at 8 pm, citing the knife attack on Petra Kvitova as a reason for her anxiety. However, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) contested this, noting the area was crime-free and that Vondrousova's decision to walk her dog was inconsistent with identifying a threat. The tribunal acknowledged her stress but did not consider her safety and stress arguments as exceptional circumstances.

The case also highlighted potential gaps in players' understanding of doping rules. Vondrousova stated she was unaware she could be tested outside her designated one-hour window, a claim the ITIA found not credible given her extensive testing history. Vondrousova plans to appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), but if unsuccessful, her ban will last until June 2030, potentially costing her prime career years.
