Hunter Armstrong Joins Enhanced Games Amid Olympic Eligibility Fight

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Hunter Armstrong plans to compete in the PED-friendly Enhanced Games this May while pursuing his 2028 Los Angeles Olympics aspirations. The 25-year-old Ohio native, who formerly held the world record in the 50-meter backstroke, told ESPN he will race without banned substances despite the event's permissive stance on performance-enhancing drugs.

Armstrong's decision comes after his main sponsor severed ties last summer, leaving him unable to pay bills. He said joining Enhanced Games was his only option to continue swimming full time. The event offers a $250,000 prize for first place, plus salaries and bonuses for world record performances. Armstrong plans to compete in the 50-meter backstroke and 100-meter freestyle.

World Aquatics amended its bylaws last year in response to Enhanced Games, stating those who "support, endorse or participate in" such events "will not be eligible" for its competitions. However, Armstrong consulted lawyers and believes the ban only applies if he stops following World Aquatics' drug-testing protocol. The federation will decide his eligibility on a case-by-case basis.
