Former Cal State Bakersfield assistant basketball coach Kevin Mays will stand trial after a California judge ruled sufficient evidence exists for prosecution on pimping and other felony charges. Mays, who pleaded not guilty, faces accusations including possession of over 600 images of child pornography, distributing obscene material involving a minor, and operating a prostitution ring across at least three states. The investigation began following an anonymous tip alleging Mays trafficked a woman for sex work in California, Oregon, and Las Vegas.

Police found explicit videos on Mays' phone depicting sexual conduct with a minor, dated between 2022 and 2024, and drugs, automatic weapons, and additional child pornography in his car and apartment. The alleged victim testified she engaged in prostitution across those states, sometimes using rented vehicles and hotels booked by Mays. Mays' attorney challenged the pimping charges, arguing the relationship was consensual and that the woman continued sex work elsewhere.
