California State University, Bakersfield's athletic department faces a major crisis after allegations surfaced that temporary assistant coach Kevin Mays operated as a pimp across four states. The scandal erupted when men's basketball coach Rod Barnes received an anonymous email in August detailing Mays' alleged trafficking activities.

Barnes forwarded the message to university HR, triggering an investigation that led to criminal charges against Mays. Police records show he faces 11 charges including pimping, possession of automatic firearms, and child pornography. Mays, who previously played for the Roadrunners from 2014-2016, had been earning just over $3,000 monthly as a temporary assistant coach since June.

University president Vernon Harper confirmed the charges were "deeply concerning" and noted the alleged activities didn't involve students. The school has launched a comprehensive review of its athletic program, consulting trafficking experts and offering campus-wide awareness training. Both Barnes and athletic director Kyle Conder left their positions in September, though the university didn't cite the scandal as the reason.
