SiFive Secures $400M, Reaching $3.65B Valuation on Open AI Chips

SiFive, the startup behind the open-source RISC-V chip design, successfully closed an oversubscribed $400 million funding round, propelling its valuation to $3.65 billion. This capital infusion is notable because SiFive's architecture directly challenges the dominance of Intel’s x86 and ARM processors currently powering Nvidia’s AI infrastructure.

Nvidia participated in the funding, joining a roster of major backers including Atreides Management, Apollo Global Management, and T. Rowe Price. SiFive licenses its designs, mirroring Arm's historical model, but its open nature provides a strategic alternative for chip developers wary of proprietary systems. This round nearly doubles its prior post-money valuation from March 2022.

RISC-V, previously confined mostly to embedded systems, is now targeting the lucrative data center CPU space with this new war chest. The startup confirmed its designs will integrate with Nvidia’s CUDA software and the NVLink Fusion server architecture, allowing it to plug into the existing AI ecosystem.

By supporting SiFive, Nvidia gains leverage against rivals like AMD and Intel by fostering an open, non-proprietary CPU alternative built to complement its GPU dominance. This move solidifies the strategic importance of RISC-V in the next generation of high-performance computing hardware.
