Nvidia has committed a substantial $5bn investment to Safe Superintelligence (SSI), a new AI startup co-founded by Ilya Sutskever, a key figure from OpenAI. This significant investment deepens Nvidia's ties with leading AI ventures and will enable SSI to scale its operations using Nvidia's advanced Vera Rubin hardware.

The funding is intended to help SSI build the necessary computing power to capitalize on what Sutskever describes as a research breakthrough, potentially increasing their computing capacity tenfold within a year. This move follows similar large investments by chipmakers, such as AMD's investment in Anthropic, highlighting a trend of strategic partnerships in the AI sector.

SSI, which has a few dozen employees, is reportedly pursuing a novel approach to AI research distinct from current large language models. Despite a high valuation and prominent talent, the startup has yet to release products or research. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang expressed excitement about SSI's potential breakthroughs, powered by Nvidia's platform. Sutskever, instrumental in OpenAI's early success, co-founded SSI in 2024 after departing OpenAI.
