Spotify Integrates Apple's HLS Technology for Cross-Platform Video Podcasts

Spotify announced it will adopt Apple's HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) technology for video podcasts, enabling creators to distribute content across both platforms without modifying their existing workflows. The integration will work through Spotify for Creators and Megaphone platforms, allowing seamless cross-platform publishing while maintaining monetization capabilities on both services.

Apple rolled out its enhanced HLS-based video podcast experience across iPhone, iPad, Apple Vision Pro, and web in late March, though Mac and Apple TV support remains unavailable. Spotify describes this move as a major step toward platform-agnostic distribution, with both companies coordinating on the technical implementation scheduled for later this year.

For creators, this eliminates the need to choose between audience reach and revenue streams. Video shows must be uploaded directly to Spotify rather than distributed via RSS to enable engagement-based monetization and real-time analytics. Additionally, hosting providers including Libsyn, Podigee, Audioboom, Audiomeans, and Podspace now support video distribution through Spotify's API, expanding creator options for multi-platform content delivery.

The integration represents a practical compromise in the competitive podcasting space, where platform exclusivity has increasingly frustrated content creators seeking maximum distribution with minimal technical overhead. By standardizing on HLS, both companies signal willingness to prioritize creator experience over platform lock-in.
