Apple is overhauling its Podcasts app with a major shift to HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) video technology, replacing older formats like MOV, MP4, and M4V. The update, currently in beta, will roll out this spring alongside the upcoming 26.4 operating systems across iOS, iPadOS, visionOS, and the web.

This change enables seamless switching between video and audio playback, introduces horizontal full-display viewing, and allows both video and audio streams to be downloaded for offline use. The previous RSS-like feed system couldn't support these features. The technology also brings picture-in-picture support for multitasking on iPad and automatically adjusts video quality for smooth playback across Wi-Fi and cellular networks.

The transition represents Apple's push to modernize its podcast platform with streaming capabilities that match user expectations for video content. By adopting HLS, Apple gains more control over the viewing experience and can deliver consistent quality across its ecosystem. The update addresses long-standing limitations of the Podcasts app, particularly for video podcasts, and positions Apple to compete more effectively with other podcast platforms that already offer robust video support.
