Spotify Embraces Apple's HLS Tech for Cross-Platform Video Podcasts

Spotify announced it will adopt Apple's HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) technology for video podcasts later this year. This integration allows creators to distribute video content across both platforms without changing their existing workflow. The move represents a significant step toward platform-agnostic video podcast distribution for content creators seeking broader audience reach.

Apple deployed HLS technology in March to enhance video delivery in Apple Podcasts across iPhone, iPad, Vision Pro, and web. Spotify's adoption means creators can now reach audiences on both services while maintaining their current setup. This eliminates the need to choose between audience reach and revenue optimization, addressing a key pain point in the podcasting industry.

Spotify also expanded video podcast support to major hosting providers including Libsyn, Podigee, Audioboom, Audiomeans, and Podspace through its Distribution API. These integrations allow creators to distribute video content directly to Spotify and monetize eligible content through the Partner Program. Additional monetization options including direct sales are rolling out soon.

The timing aligns with Apple's upcoming OS 27 updates that will bring enhanced video podcasts to Mac and Apple TV. Spotify emphasizes it's working directly with Apple on this integration, though specific timeline details remain forthcoming. This collaboration signals growing maturity in the video podcasting ecosystem.
