Apple is adding video podcast capabilities to the Apple Podcasts app with iOS 26.4, marking a significant expansion of the platform's features. The update leverages HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) technology to give creators "unprecedented control and monetization opportunities" while delivering high-quality viewing experiences. Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice president of Services, emphasized this milestone builds on Apple's two-decade history of podcasting innovation.

Users will be able to seamlessly switch between watching and listening to shows, with videos downloadable for offline viewing. HLS ensures smooth playback across Wi-Fi and cellular networks, addressing a common pain point for mobile podcast consumption. The video episodes will integrate with existing Apple Podcasts features like personalized recommendations and editorial suggestions in the New and Category sections.

The feature launches with support from major hosting providers including Acast, ART19, Omny Studio, and SiriusXM brands. Creators can dynamically insert video ads for broader advertising opportunities, potentially opening new revenue streams. Apple Podcasts users can test the HLS video feature today in the beta versions of iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, and visionOS 26.4, with the official release scheduled for spring.
