iPhone 18 Pro Skips Dual-Layer OLED - What We Know

Chinese leaker Instant Digital has poured cold water on hopes for a major iPhone display upgrade. In a Weibo post, the well-known source said the iPhone 18 Pro will not feature dual-layer OLED technology, dashing expectations for significantly brighter outdoor viewing. Apple's current thermal management approach remains a limiting factor for sustained peak brightness on Pro iPhones.

The iPhone 17 Pro made little meaningful progress on this front, and Instant Digital suggested that without a change to Apple's thermal throttling strategy, dual-layer OLED is the only path to a significant real-world brightness improvement. A report from last August indicated Apple has set a two-year production plan for the technology, pointing to an arrival no earlier than after 2028.

For the iPhone 18 Pro, the display upgrade on the table is LTPO+ technology from Samsung Display and LG Display. China's BOE has been cut from the premium tier due to quality and yield issues. While LTPO+ will improve battery efficiency, it does not address peak brightness or thermal throttling. The M4 iPad Pro was the first Apple product with dual-layer OLED, and iPhone customers will have to wait considerably longer for the same capability.
