DuckDuckGo Browser Blocks YouTube Ads

DuckDuckGo's free web browser now automatically blocks most YouTube video ads on its latest iPhone and Mac versions. The feature, announced Wednesday, prevents ads from playing before and during videos on YouTube's site, preserving the viewing experience without interruptions, including history tracking and playlist saving.

Users need to access YouTube via the DuckDuckGo browser's website to utilize this ad blocking; links tapped on iPhone may open the dedicated YouTube app, where ad blocking is not active. DuckDuckGo employs community-sourced filter lists from uBlock Origin alongside its own rules to minimize potential website breakage, though users might notice slightly longer initial buffering times.

This move by DuckDuckGo comes amid Google's ongoing efforts to circumvent ad blockers across its platforms. While not the first browser to offer this functionality, with Brave and Opera already providing similar features, DuckDuckGo's browser also includes over a dozen other privacy protections like tracker and cookie pop-up blocking.

The implementation of YouTube ad blocking by DuckDuckGo provides users with an alternative for a less interrupted viewing experience, directly challenging Google's advertising model and offering more privacy-focused options in the browser market.
