Apple's Foldable iPhone Ultra Limited to Two Colors

Apple's first foldable iPhone, expected to be called the iPhone Ultra, will reportedly launch with just two color options, avoiding bold or vibrant finishes. Leakers have confirmed white as one option, with silver and possibly an indigo color similar to the iPhone 17 Pro's Deep Blue finish also mentioned. This limited approach mirrors Apple's strategy with the iPhone X, which debuted with only Silver and Space Gray options.

The restrained color selection likely stems from production challenges. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo warned that yield and ramp-up issues could cause shortages lasting into 2027, with annual volumes expected to be modest. Developing additional colors adds complexity to an already challenging manufacturing process, especially for a device with constrained supply and potentially high demand.

At a starting price crossing $2,000, the iPhone Ultra represents Apple's ambitious entry into the foldable market. The device is expected to be announced in September 2026 alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models. With supply chain constraints affecting production, Apple has little commercial incentive to broaden the initial color palette for a premium device targeting a niche market segment.
