Foldable iPhone Color Options Remain Uncertain Ahead of 2026 Launch

Apple hasn't decided whether its first foldable iPhone will include black in the color lineup, according to Weibo leaker Instant Digital. The leaker questioned if Apple has a 'vendetta against the color black,' suggesting the company is still weighing options despite the device entering mass production soon. White remains the only confirmed shade, with a second color still unspecified.

Previous reports indicated the foldable iPhone would launch with only two color options, avoiding bold or vibrant finishes. Supply chain sources claim the second finish may be an indigo shade similar to the iPhone 17 Pro's Deep Blue. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported Apple plans to stick with traditional silver, white, and space gray/black finishes rather than taking risks with colorful variants.

The uncertainty comes as Samsung Display OLED panels ramp up production, with color decisions typically locked well before launch. Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo warned that yield challenges could constrain supply through late 2026, making additional color variants a complication Apple may want to avoid. Limited SKUs help manage the tight launch supply expected for this complex device.

Apple historically launched groundbreaking products with restrained color palettes, like the iPhone X which debuted in just Silver and Space Gray at $999. The foldable iPhone, expected to cross the $2,000 threshold, targets buyers less concerned with color options. A narrow initial palette aligns with Apple's typical incremental rollout strategy for major new product categories.
