Apple's Dual App Versions Create Confusion, Prompt Support Guide

Apple quietly published a support document addressing an unusual problem: users cannot easily tell the difference between Apple Creator Studio subscription apps and standalone versions. The company ships two variants of Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, Motion, and other creative tools that share identical names and can coexist on the same Mac.

The confusion emerged after Apple launched Creator Studio in January at $12.99 per month, bundling its professional apps under a subscription model. Some features now require a subscription, splitting the user base between free-standing purchases and monthly fees. Apple's fix involves redesigned Liquid Glass icons for subscription versions, with the support page showing side-by-side comparisons to help users identify which edition they're running.

This marks a rare acknowledgment of user experience friction for Apple, which doesn't typically publish guides explaining how to distinguish between its own products. The dual-version approach reflects Apple's push toward recurring revenue while maintaining traditional one-time purchase options.

Apple acquired Pixelmator in November 2024, and including Pixelmator Pro in Creator Studio signals deeper integration of the acquired team into Apple's creative ecosystem. The support document essentially serves as damage control for a transition period that may confuse creative professionals.
