Apple Vision Pro Successor Delayed Until 2028

Apple is developing a cheaper, lighter Vision Pro successor but won't launch it until late 2028 or 2029, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The company needs to create a slimmer design and reduce the cost from the current $3,499 price point before returning to the headset category, which Gurman describes as essentially "on ice" until then. The delay reflects Apple's commitment to solving technical challenges before releasing a product that could achieve mass market appeal.

Apple's focus has shifted to its smart glasses project, with former Vision Products Group members reassigned to that team. The company now aims to release its first smart glasses in late 2027. Gurman made clear this differs from the long-rumored "Vision Air," which Apple cancelled last year after determining it wasn't ready for prime time.

Apple refreshed the Vision Pro in October 2025 with an updated model featuring an M5 chip. The company continues developing new technologies and materials behind the scenes for the successor, but consumers should expect at least a two-year wait before any new headset announcement. Apple remains committed to spatial computing but is taking a measured approach to market entry.
