Apple Vision Pro Originally Named 'Reality Pro'

According to prototype collector Kosutami, the Apple headset was internally dubbed Reality Pro during early development before finalizing its retail name. Internal code strings confirm the placeholder branding persisted through later software builds. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman previously reported in September 2022 that Apple’s inaugural headset would likely launch under that moniker, aligning with trademark filings submitted through shell companies. Additional applications covered terms like xrOS and visionOS ahead of the official reveal.

Apple ultimately unveiled the device as the Vision Pro at WWDC 2023, dropping the Reality branding entirely. Despite the rebrand, traces of the original naming scheme remained in internal builds. Apple reportedly still holds trademark rights to Reality Pro, which may prove crucial in markets where licensing conflicts exist. In China, Huawei retains a ten-year license to the Vision Pro name until 2031.

The headset launched in the United States in February 2024 at $3,499. Recently, Apple laid off roughly 100 employees from its Vision Products Group and shuttered gaming and immersive video divisions. These cuts signal a strategic pivot toward smart glasses, effectively shelving planned successors.
