Apple iOS 26.5 Adds Encrypted RCS Messaging

Apple has released iOS 26.5 and iPadOS 26.5, bringing end-to-end encryption for RCS messages between iPhone and Android users. The update introduces a new "Suggested Places" feature in Maps and adds a Pride Luminance wallpaper. The software comes nearly two months after iOS 26.4 and is available through Settings > General > Software Update on eligible devices.

The encrypted RCS messaging requires both conversation participants to have carriers supporting the feature, with carriers rolling out support over time. Encrypted messages display a small lock icon and match the end-to-end encryption protections of iMessage. Apple is also laying groundwork for ads in Maps, which will launch this summer. Additionally, updates are available for older devices unable to run iOS 26.

While this update adds new features, iOS 26.5 and iPadOS 26.5 may represent some of the last significant updates before Apple shifts focus to iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, expected at WWDC next month. The RCS encryption addresses long-standing complaints about messaging limitations between iPhone and Android users, improving cross-platform communication security.
