The Connectivity Standards Alliance today released the Aliro 1.0 specification, a new standard backed by Apple, Google, and Samsung that aims to simplify how smart door locks work with smartphones and wearables. Aliro enables interoperability between mobile devices, wearables, and access control readers, allowing smart locks to function without dedicated apps across homes, corporate offices, universities, and hotels.

Major smart home companies including Kwikset, Nuki Home Solutions, and Aqara have signed on to support the standard. Aliro-enabled locks will integrate with wallet apps on both iPhone and Android devices, with companies like Apple, Allegion, HID, and STMicroelectronics among the first to achieve Aliro 1.0 certification. The specification supports multiple communication methods including NFC, Bluetooth LE, and ultra wideband (UWB).

The Aliro 1.0 framework uses asymmetric cryptography to secure interactions between user devices and readers while maintaining privacy. This addresses a key limitation of existing systems that relied on symmetric cryptography and required separate credentials for different lock manufacturers. The standard will evolve over time with future features like secure key sharing planned for implementation.
