Matter 1.6 Brings NFC Setup and Smarter Multi-Platform Home Control

The Connectivity Standards Alliance unveiled Matter 1.6, the latest update to the smart home interoperability standard backed by Apple, Google, and Amazon. This version targets three main areas: streamlined device setup, coordinated multi-platform management, and more intelligent control responses. The improvements aim to solve longstanding pain points for both manufacturers and consumers.

A standout feature is NFC-Based Commissioning, which lets users configure devices like ceiling light bulbs and in-wall switches before full installation. Simply holding a smartphone near the device transfers setup credentials, eliminating the need for Bluetooth LE pairing or post-installation configuration. This solves a practical problem for hardwired fixtures that can't be easily accessed after mounting.

Matter 1.6 also introduces Joint Fabric, enabling multiple authorized controllers to share administration of a single network. Android and iOS users can control the same devices without duplicate setup processes. Thermostat Suggestions add intelligence by submitting time-bound recommendations rather than direct commands, preventing conflicts when users have manual preferences or utility program commitments.

Security sensors gain standardized event history reporting, while CO and smoke detectors can now signal when removed from their installed position. Though available now for manufacturers, Apple's slow adoption of previous Matter versions suggests Apple Home users may wait before seeing these benefits in their homes.
