The Connectivity Standards Alliance unveiled Matter 1.6 and Product Security 1.1 during its Unify event. These updates aim to fix fragmentation in the smart home market. Matter 1.6 introduces NFC-based commissioning, allowing users to set up devices like light bulbs or switches via a simple tap before they are even installed in a wall or ceiling.

New features like Joint Fabric allow multiple controllers to manage a single network without repetitive setup. Additionally, the new Thermostat Suggestions feature lets ecosystems propose temperature changes rather than forcing commands. This prevents automation conflicts and respects user preferences across different platforms, making multi-ecosystem environments much more stable and intuitive for everyday users.

Security also receives a major overhaul with the new Product Security 1.1 standard. This version shifts focus from individual devices to entire IoT systems, including apps and gateways. It streamlines compliance for international regulations, such as the EU Radio Equipment Directive, by reducing redundant testing requirements for manufacturers through a tiered certification process.
