Samsung has expanded its Wallet app beyond payments with the new Digital Home Key feature, allowing users to unlock compatible smart locks using their phones. Announced March 2, the feature supports both UWB and NFC connectivity depending on the lock model. Samsung partnered with Aliro, a CSA-standardized protocol, to ensure interoperability between digital keys and smart home locks.

To use the feature, consumers must set up a compatible smart door lock through SmartThings and complete the onboarding process in Wallet. The key is stored securely on the device using Samsung Knox security, with biometric or PIN protection required for access. NFC users will need to tap their phone on the lock, while UWB offers proximity-based unlocking without physical contact.

The rollout begins this month with plans to expand compatibility with more smart lock brands. This marks a significant shift for Samsung Wallet, which has focused primarily on payment features like split in-store payments and Tap to Transfer in recent updates. By entering the smart home space, Samsung aims to provide users with a more convenient and secure way to access their homes using technology they already carry daily.
