Samsung Wallet Digital ID Faces Privacy Concerns Despite TSA Approval

Samsung has partnered with CLEAR to launch Samsung ID, a digital passport feature for Galaxy users at more than 250 TSA checkpoints nationwide. The feature stores encrypted passport data within Samsung Wallet, secured by Samsung Knox and accessible via fingerprint or PIN authentication. Users can create their digital ID by verifying their physical passport through CLEAR's identity verification process.

However, privacy concerns are already surfacing online. One user reported being misled into believing CLEAR was a government program at San Diego airport in 2022, claiming representatives lied about its nature before collecting biometric data. Despite requesting deletion, they allegedly continued receiving marketing emails, raising questions about CLEAR's data handling practices. Other travelers express skepticism about storing multiple credentials in a single app that becomes a point of failure.

Technical adoption issues compound the privacy worries. Reddit users report mixed success rates, with one traveler going "0-3" when attempting to use digital IDs at TSA checkpoints due to equipment compatibility and staff training gaps. Samsung acknowledges that not all airports support the feature and recommends carrying backup physical identification regardless.

Samsung enters a space where Apple and Google already established digital ID functionality, making this catch-up effort feel rushed. While the convenience appeals to frequent travelers, the combination of privacy concerns, inconsistent airport support, and single-device dependency creates legitimate hesitation about trusting phones as identity hubs.
