Apple Wallet continues its expansion beyond simple payment methods, integrating more physical access controls across various industries. Recent updates saw Toyota rolling out support for its digital car key feature, allowing drivers to manage their vehicles through the iPhone or Apple Watch. This integration follows similar moves by other automakers to adopt Wallet’s secure access protocols.

Digital home access also saw a major bump with the arrival of the Aqara Smart Lock U400. This new lock incorporates Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology, promising superior precision and reliability for auto-locking and unlocking doors compared to older standards. Furthermore, American Airlines finally introduced support for the upgraded boarding pass experience, complete with Live Activities and Find My integration.

Future additions promise further utility, though some timelines are distant; the University of Texas plans to offer digital student IDs by the 2027-2028 academic year. Porsche is also slated to enable car key functionality soon for its upcoming electric Macan and Cayenne models. Two states, Arkansas and Virginia, have committed to supporting digital driver’s licenses in Wallet.

These ongoing third-party integrations demonstrate Apple’s strategy of making Wallet an indispensable hub for personal authentication, moving far past simple NFC transactions. The slow but steady adoption by major players confirms the platform's growing influence on physical access infrastructure.
